A step over pet gate is a low barrier that adults cross by lifting a leg over it. That can work at a quiet room boundary, but it is a poor choice when crossing feels awkward or your dog can jump it. Start with both sides of the decision: can your pet respect the boundary, and can everyone in the home cross it comfortably?

Step over pet gate comparison: two different formats
| Model | Manufacturer-listed size | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Carlson Lil Tuffy, #0618 | 18 inches tall; 22–38-inch opening range | Pressure-mounted metal barrier with a small pet opening |
| Richell Freestanding Pet Gate Small, item 94156 | 26.4–40.2 × 17.7 × 20.1 inches | Standing divider; reserve room for its depth and side panels |
These are two starting points for different room layouts, not an escape-proof ranking. Measure the actual opening and check the exact product manual. A pet’s weight or breed alone does not establish whether it can bypass a low barrier.
Carlson Lil Tuffy: for a pressure-mounted room boundary
Carlson’s current product page identifies model #0618 as an 18-inch-high gate for openings from 22 to 38 inches. It lists an all-metal frame, pressure mounting and no extension option. The small pet door is listed as 7.5 inches wide by 7.75 inches high.
Consider it when: you want to investigate a compact fixed-position barrier and your opening fits the exact version you buy. The small door may help separate differently sized pets, but only if the pet you want to restrict cannot fit through it.
Check carefully: retailer listings can describe a different width range or revision. Do not assume an older listing and the current manufacturer page describe identical hardware. Match the model and supplied manual, and ask the seller to resolve conflicting dimensions before ordering.
Read Carlson’s product specifications and manual link. Use the mounting parts and setup required by that manual rather than assuming pressure mounting always means a damage-free installation.
Richell Small: for a freestanding divider
Richell lists item 94156 at 26.4–40.2 inches wide, 17.7 inches deep and 20.1 inches high. It recommends this Small version for dogs weighing 6.5–17.5 pounds. The design combines a rubberwood frame, wire slats, side panels and rubber feet.
Consider it when: you prefer a standing room divider and have enough level floor area for its supported layout. It avoids relying on a doorway pressure fit, but it still needs correct assembly and placement.
Check carefully: the side supports occupy floor space near your walking route. Do not flatten or fold them into an unsupported arrangement simply to make the gate fit. A dog that pushes, jumps or climbs may need a different barrier.
Review Richell’s Small gate page and instruction manual. Its Large and taller versions have different dimensions, so match the item rather than the family name.
Choose the crossing route before the height
A low gate trades a latch-opening task for repeated stepping. That trade may suit a quiet spare-room entrance. It may be inconvenient in a kitchen doorway used dozens of times a day. Think about the busiest part of the day, including carrying laundry, moving a vacuum or walking through in dim light.
If someone uses a mobility aid, cannot comfortably clear the barrier, or needs a clear walking route, choose another format. Do not make stepping over it a requirement for visitors or children. A taller walk-through model may be the more practical solution even for a small dog.

Measure a step over pet gate in five checks
- Opening width: measure at the actual contact points, including baseboards and trim. Record different upper and lower measurements.
- Floor footprint: for a standing model, mark out its depth and side supports with removable tape before ordering.
- Pet-sized gaps: examine the spaces below the gate, between bars and around the ends. Consider your smallest pet.
- Human access: plan how everyone will enter the room. If stepping feels strained, choose a door rather than a lower-quality crossing routine.
- Nearby objects: move furniture that could create a route over the barrier and check that a room door will not hit it.
Do not encourage a dog to jump a gate as a way to test it. Start with supervised use after installation. If the pet challenges, moves or bypasses the barrier, stop relying on that setup and reassess the enclosure and training needs.
Where a low gate does not belong
Do not use a step-over barrier across the top of stairs or an escape route that needs clear access. For stair protection, select a gate explicitly approved by its manufacturer for that location and follow its prescribed mounting method. A freestanding divider is not an anchored stair barrier.
A low gate also should not be treated as secure outdoor fencing or a solution for a determined escape artist. Metal construction alone does not establish outdoor suitability. For decks and patios, compare the outdoor pet gate guide and check the manufacturer’s intended use.
If children share the home, verify child-safety suitability separately. A product sold for pets is not automatically designed or approved to contain a child.
Amazon vs Walmart: compare complete matching gates
| Compare | What to record at each retailer |
|---|---|
| Exact item | Brand, model number, size, color and revision where stated |
| Included parts | Complete gate, supports and required mounting hardware; exclude extension-only listings |
| Delivered cost | Current item price, delivery and any required accessories |
| Seller and returns | Seller identity, item condition, return window and return-shipping responsibility |
We do not identify a cheaper retailer because prices, stock and delivery vary. Use the same model and configuration on both sites, then compare the checkout totals. A search match is not proof that the item is available or suitable.
Frequently asked questions
Is an 18-inch gate enough for a small dog?
Not necessarily. Some small dogs readily jump or climb low barriers. Choose according to the individual pet and location, then supervise initial use.
Does a small pet door let cats through but stop dogs?
Only when the animals’ sizes and behavior make that possible. A small dog may fit through the same opening. Keep the pet door closed when it defeats the boundary you need.
Is freestanding the same as pressure mounted?
No. A freestanding gate relies on its supported footprint; a pressure-mounted model secures between suitable surfaces as directed in its manual.
Can I add an extension to the Lil Tuffy?
Carlson’s current #0618 page says it has no extensions. Do not improvise an extension or attach an accessory from another gate.
What should I inspect after setup?
Check the fixings or supports, pet-door latch, bottom gap and stability according to the manual. Recheck after moving or adjusting the gate, and stop using it if any part is damaged or loose.
